Mira Nair's moving tale of culture, class, and forbidden romance features memorable performances by Sarita Choudhury and Denzel Washington. Screening in a beautiful new restoration from the Criterion Collection.
Sarita Choudhury is Mina, a young woman who, along with her family, has lived in Mississippi for years after all Asians were expelled from Uganda in 1972. Her father has never fully come to terms with the move and is driven to reclaim the family’s property lost after fleeing the country. Meanwhile, Mina falls for Demetrius (Denzel Washington), an African American carpet cleaner, but the couple must hide their interracial relationship from their conservative families and communities. (118 mins., 4K DCP)
