The Mole Agent

(El agente topo, Maite Alberdi, 2020)

Two men, one in a brown suit and wearing glasses and the other in a trenchcoat with his hand resting on file cabinet stand in a cluttered office in front of file cabinets and a wall of photos and documents.

Disarmingly charming and generous with its displays of emotion and humor, The Mole Agent is a stealthily endearing crowd-pleaser.

This Chilean film stylishly and surprisingly fuses the spy movie with observational documentary as a private investigator hires Sergio, an 83-year-old widower, to infiltrate a retirement home to investigate a case of possible mistreatment. As Sergio bumbles his way through learning the latest spy gadgets (as well as more ordinary technologies like FaceTime), he also begins to get involved in the lives of the elderly residents and makes numerous poignant discoveries about love, loneliness, and growing old. In Spanish with English subtitles. (84 mins., DCP)
