Join us for a singular live performance examining a trove of forgotten Yugoslav newsreels that Mila Turajlić encountered in her hometown of Belgrade.

Non-Aligned Newsreels: Fragments from the Debris is a live performance that engages with newsreel footage filmed in the wake of political crisis and upheaval to follow the development of the Non-Aligned Movement, the political alliance forged between young nations that sided neither with the US nor the Soviet Union during the Cold War. By weaving together newsreels from Algeria, Mali, Mozambique, and Tanzania, Turajlić’s hybrid film-performance-lecture poetically traces the networks of solidarity that formed between the former Yugoslavia and nations in the throes of decolonial revolutionary struggle. With profound reverence for the footage, people, and histories she encounters in the archive, Turajlić honors the role of the moving image in building global revolutionary movements. "For me, working with archives is an act of resistance against erasure. My work creates an archive that will, I hope, allow my generation and future ones to know our stories."

About the filmmaker

Mila Turajlić

Mila Turajlić, born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, is an award-winning filmmaker and archive “artivist” whose works include Cinema Komunisto (2010) and IDFA-winner The Other Side of Everything (2017). Her most recent documentary diptych Non-Aligned and Ciné-Guerrillas: Scenes from the Labudović Reels (2022)—an archival road trip through the birth of the Third World—was described by the New York Times as “a visually arresting inquiry into what it takes to envision a new world.” She is the founder of the Non-Aligned Newsreels research project (nonalignednewsreels.com), an artistic exploration of the orphaned status of film archives made by Yugoslavia in a gesture of “ciné-solidarity” with the non-aligned world.
