In the bleak but intimate Plan 75, Michiko must decide whether to submit to a sinister government program designed to reduce an aging population.
In Japan’s not-so-distant future, the government implements a program encouraging people over the age of 75 to voluntarily pursue medically assisted dying to reduce their “burden” on society. The evocative drama Plan 75 follows several characters as they navigate this system, including Michiko (Chieko Baishô), a woman who is eligible for the program; Hiromu (Hayato Isomura), a sharp young clerk working within the bureaucracy of Plan 75; and Maria (Stefanie Arianne), a caregiver who switches jobs for higher pay at one of the Plan 75 centers. Described as “tender and devastatingly unsentimental” by Seventh Row, Chie Hayakawa’s debut feature is a quiet approach to dystopia. Winner of a Camera d’Or Special Mention at Cannes this year. In Japanese and Tagalog with English subtitles. (112 mins., DCP)
