We strive to host inclusive, accessible events that enable all individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to engage fully. If you have questions about accessibility or require an accommodation such as CART captioning or ASL interpretation to participate in this event, please contact Accessibility Manager Helyn Marshall at accessibility@wexarts.org or via telephone at (614) 688-3890. Requests made by two weeks in advance will generally allow us to provide seamless access, but the Wexner Center for the Arts will make every effort to meet requests made after this date.
Screening in 35mm, ‘Round Midnight—one of the all-time great films about jazz—follows an alcoholic saxophonist living in Paris in the 1950s.
Based on the life of Bud Powell and portrayed by the real-life bebop great Dexter Gordon (in an uncommonly lived-in, Oscar-nominated performance), the main character’s journey captures the experiences of so many Black expats hoping to find respect and recognition abroad when none was available at home. Hancock won an Oscar for his score which, in an unusual and innovative decision, was performed live on camera by an all-star band including Gordon, Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Bobby Hutcherson, Bobby McFerrin, John McLaughlin, and Wayne Shorter, among others. Hancock appears prominently onscreen as the band leader and Martin Scorsese, whose personal 35mm print we’re showing, also has a small but memorable role. (131 mins., 35mm)
