The Shaman Sorceress

(Ahn Jae-huun, 2018)

A brightly colored animated image of a woman in profile looking to the right of the frame. In the background is a multicolored stained-glass window.

In this animated musical, the generational divides and competing religious beliefs fuel tension between a mother and her beloved son.

Based on a 1936 Korean short story, The Shaman Sorceress follows Mohwa, a traditional shaman revered in her village for her abilities as a healer. Concerned about her son’s well-being, she sends him to be raised at a Buddhist temple. There he grows disenchanted and departs for Seoul, where he wanders into a Christian church and is soon converted. Upon his return to the village, his reunion with his family leads to a battle of wills as well as belief systems. Set during Japan’s colonial rule of Korea, the animated feature is a showcase for Ahn's expressive, hand-drawn style. In Korean with English subtitles. (85 mins., DCP)
