The Shower

(Ahn Jae-huun, 2017)

Followed by selected short films

An animated image of a young woman and a young man talking in the rain, while standing in a lush forest in front of a structure made of branches.

A quiet and tender look at a blossoming relationship as two young people discover the meaning of love.

The Shower is based on the short story “Rain Shower” by prodigious writer Hwang Sun-won. Written in 1952, it has become one of the most well-known works in Korean literature. The film follows a series of encounters between a boy and a girl alongside a small stream. During one interlude, rain begins to pour, and the pair find refuge together, their adolescent feelings for each other deepening. The story is a nostalgic favorite among Koreans for its depiction of country life and young love; the rain symbolizes the intense, but ultimately brief, feelings between the boy and girl. In Korean with English subtitles. (48 mins., DCP)

A selection of Ahn’s short films follow the feature. In Korean with English subtitles. (approx. 30 mins.)
