Meet the defiant and dazzling women of the Middle East’s first all-female thrash metal band in this engaging documentary introduced by director Rita Baghdadi.
A magnetic coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the Lebanese revolution, Sirens focuses on the band Slave to the Sirens and its founders and guitarists, Lilas Mayassi and Shery Bechara. Defying expectations of gender and sexuality, the pair attempt to navigate keeping the band together and remaining friends after their romantic relationship ended.
Even if you’ve never thrown the “sign of the horns” gesture at a metal concert, it’s hard not to be charmed by the band’s bravery as they contend with countless ups and downs, both personally and professionally, as well as violence and unrest, in their pursuit of becoming rock stars. Executive produced by Natasha Lyonne and Maya Rudolph. In Arabic and English with English subtitles. (78 mins., DCP)
Rita Baghdadi founded Lady & Bird, a female-run documentary production company focused on stories from underrepresented voices, with Camilla Hall and Jennifer Tiexiera. Hall joins us in person for her film Subject, screening October 27.
