Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, acclaimed director Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s luminous examination of life and death defies easy categorization.
Uncle Boonmee is a magical, surreal trip through the mind of a man contemplating reincarnation at the end of his life. Surrounded by loved ones and caretakers at his home in the Thai countryside, he is visited by the spirits of his deceased wife and long-lost son (returned to him in nonhuman form). As he is escorted by these beings through the dense jungle to a remote hilltop cave, he sees what might be his previous lives pass before him. In Isan and Thai with English subtitles. (114 mins., DCP)
Apichatpong Weerasethakul has been voted the most important filmmaker of the past several decades in several critics’ polls. He was the 2004–5 recipient of our Artist Residency Award in film/video, and several of his films have screened at the Wex in the past. Most recently, the Wex commissioned Weerasethakul for our Cinetracts ’20 project showcasing filmmakers from around the world tasked with “capturing the zeitgeist in your own backyard.”
