Winner of the US Documentary Directing Award at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, Users is a dazzling visual essay that questions where humanity’s dependence on technology is taking us and the planet.
Directed by MacArthur Fellow and frequent Wex guest Natalia Almada, Users is fueled by Almada’s anxiety for her children inheriting a warming Earth and becoming more dependent on infallible machines than their imperfect mothers. Shifting between the intimate and the epic, the documentary features transcendent camerawork and imagery and powerful music by the Kronos Quartet while posing some of this moment’s most pressing questions. (81 mins., DCP)
Along with fellow Unorthodocs 21 guest Rosine Mbakam and others, Almada contributed a short film to the Artist Residency Award project Cinetracts ’20, which you can watch on this site.
