1984

(Michael Radford, 1984)

Introduced with readings by Scott Woods and Travis McClerking

A still of John Hurt as Winston Smith in 1984. A black-and-white face is behind him.

This gripping adaptation of Orwell’s bleak vision of the future remains all too relevant 40 years later.

Released in the same year as the title of George Orwell’s dystopian prophesy, 1984 stars John Hurt as Winston Smith, an oppressed worker living under constant surveillance in totalitarian Oceana under the brutal rule of Big Brother. His humanity is restored, to a degree, when he begins a secret affair with fellow worker Julia (Suzanna Hamilton). (110 mins., 4K DCP)
