Black Sunday

(La maschera del demonio, Mario Bava, 1960, Italy)

Introduced by Hope Madden, author and filmmaker

A woman stands with her arms above her head looking apprehensively behind her.

Our horror world tour begins with an acclaimed and influential Gothic film that started the golden age of Italian horror movies!

A Gothically stylized tale of witchcraft and revenge, Black Sunday changed the trajectory of horror movies in Italy and beyond! The iconic “Queen of All Scream Queens” Barbara Steele gives her signature performance as a 17th century witch who vows to get revenge on her tormentors as she’s condemned to death. Two centuries later, her curse comes to life when she rises from the grave to get retribution! Horror maestro Mario Bava brings lush beauty and lighting to Black Sunday, which has influenced everything from spaghetti westerns to today’s A24 horror films. In Italian with English subtitles. (87 mins., DCP)

Goreometer: 2 / 4
Graphic violence and sexuality by 1960s standards that are still effective but far from scandalous today.
