The Cat o' Nine Tails

(Il gatto a nove code, Dario Argento, 1971)

Introduced by Hope Madden, author and filmmaker

New Restoration

Two men wearing dark suits are facing each other in front of a stone wall. One is looking at the other, who is wearing a dark hat and glasses and carrying a cane.

American star Karl Malden helped make The Cat o’ Nine Tails a hit in the United States.

One of Argento’s most accessible films, The Cat o’ Nine Tails stars Karl Malden (A Streetcar Named Desire) as a blind crossword puzzle designer who teams with a reporter (James Franciscus) to investigate the death of a scientist killed in a suspicious train accident. With another great score by Ennio Morricone and a title that refers to the number of leads the pair must follow before they discover the killer, the film was a hit despite Argento’s misgivings about the finished product. In English and Italian with English subtitles. (112 mins., 4K DCP)

The screening is introduced by critic, author, and filmmaker Hope Madden of Columbus Underground and maddwolf.com and director of the horror film Obstacle Corpse (2022).
