Deep Red

(Profondo rosso, Dario Argento, 1975)

Introduced by Erik Herrmann, Ohio State’s Knowlton School

New Restoration

A ventriloquist dummy with wearing a black suit is lying on the ground. Its head is shattered with the right side resting above the body.

Deep Red is widely considered to be Argento’s best work—a milestone of horror filmmaking alongside his more well-known feature Suspiria (1977).

In Deep Red, a famous psychic detects the presence of a murderer in the auditorium where she is performing. Later that night, she turns up dead, her murder witnessed by a musician (Blow-Up’s David Hemmings). Teaming up with a reporter, he searches for clues to the murderer’s identity. This giallo classic features Argento’s first collaboration with Italian prog rock band Goblin. In Italian, German, and Hebrew with English subtitles. (127 mins., 4K DCP)

Before the screening, Assistant Professor Erik Herrmann from Ohio State’s Knowlton School discusses Argento’s use of color and its influence on his own approach to architecture.

Please note: The films in this series include scenes of violence, horror gore, and other disturbing images.

"Deep Red evinces the full extent of Argento’s seductive artistry. The film’s glamorous collection of psychics, dandies, and artists suggestively discuss murder as if they’re speaking of sex. And aren’t they, really?"
Elaina Patton, New Yorker
