The Five Days

(Le cinque giornate, Dario Argento, 1973)

New Restoration

A pregnant woman in a light-colored dress is trying to lie down on a bed. Two men are standing in front of her trying to help ease her down onto the bed.

Argento’s lone departure from the horror genre is a farcical buddy comedy set in Milan during the Italian revolutions of 1848.

The dark comedy The Five Days follows an escaped thief and a baker in Milan who witnesses a parade of memorable characters and situations during the tumultuous final days of the 1848 revolution against Austria. Starring Italian music legend Adriano Celentano (composer of the famed nonsense song “Prisencolinensinainciusol”), it is one of Argento’s most rarely screened films. In Italian with English subtitles. (122 mins., 4K DCP)
