Household Saints

(Nancy Savoca, 1993)

Director Nancy Savoca and Producer Richard Guay in person

New Restoration

One of the most beloved indie films of the early 1990s finds an Italian American family trying to balance tradition, modernity, and faith.

Based on the novel by Francine Prose, Household Saints follows three generations of Italian American women. A young Italian butcher (Vincent D’Onofrio) “wins” the hand of his future wife (Tracey Ullman) in a pinochle game. Against the objections of his overbearing Roman Catholic mother (Judith Malina), the couple marry and eventually have a daughter. Played by Lili Taylor, she grows up a devout Catholic and dedicates herself to her namesake St. Theresa. Her faith complicates their daily lives and is tested when she meets a young man (Michael Imperioli) who wants a traditional wife and family. This beautifully tender film is laugh-out-loud funny one moment and filled with sobering pathos the next. Taylor won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance. A Q&A with Savoca and Guay follows the screening. (125 mins., 4K DCP)
