This fascinating early film by Mila Turajlić follows the troubled history of Serbia through the experiences of her mother, a tireless dissident against multiple regimes.

A locked door inside a Belgrade home has kept one family separated from their past for generations. An intimate conversation between the director, Mila Turajlić, and her mother, the dynamic activist and scholar Srbijanka Turajlić, reveals a house and a country haunted by history. What begins as the chronicle of a childhood home grows into an elegant portrait of a charismatic and brilliant woman in times of great political turmoil. In Serbian with English subtitles. About the filmmaker

Mila Turajlić

Mila Turajlić, born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, is an award-winning filmmaker and archive “artivist” whose works include Cinema Komunisto (2010), and IDFA-winner The Other Side of Everything (2017). Her most recent documentary diptych Non-Aligned and Ciné-Guerrillas: Scenes from the Labudović Reels (2022)—an archival road trip through the birth of the Third World—was described by the New York Times as “a visually arresting inquiry into what it takes to envision a new world.” She is the founder of the Non-Aligned Newsreels research project (nonalignednewsreels.com) an artistic exploration of the orphaned status of film archives made by Yugoslavia in a gesture of “ciné-solidarity” with the non-aligned world.
