Suspiria | The Black Cat

(Dario Argento, 1977 and 1990)

Double Feature | New Restoration

A collage of two images, in the left image a terrified woman wearing a brown sweater is holding a blade; in the right image a man with a camera is standing behind a female police officer who is examining a dead body in a white, lacy dress.

See one of the greatest horror films ever made alongside Argento’s rarely screened gem based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe.

The film most consider to be Argento’s masterpiece, Suspiria stars Jessica Harper as Suzy, an American ballerina who arrives at a German academy to further her training. As the bodies (and maggots) begin to pile up, one might suspect the school is a front for a coven of witches! The dynamic score by Italian prog rock band Goblin is a classic in its own right. In English, Italian, Russian, German, and Latin with English subtitles. (100 mins., 4K DCP)

Suspiria is followed by The Black Cat, Argento’s episode in the anthology film Two Evil Eyes (Due occhi diabolici, 1990). Argento’s contribution stars Harvey Keitel in an unhinged performance as a photographer who becomes obsessed with a black cat that has entered his life. (66 mins., 4K DCP)

Please note: The films in this series include scenes of violence, horror gore, and other disturbing images.

"The most horrific moments have a ghastly beauty. Even the blood splatters feel like a living (sort of) Jackson Pollock painting."
Peter Sobczynski on Suspiria
