The Umbrellas of Cherbourg

(Jacques Demy, 1964, France)

Introduced by Chris Feil, This Had Oscar Buzz cohost
Reception | 6 PM

A young blond woman faces away from a mirror hanging on a pink wall.

One of the most beloved musicals ever made, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg overflows with beauty, heartbreak, color, and music.

The Umbrellas of Cherbourg follows the highs and lows of love after a young girl falls for a gas station mechanic—only to have their romance interrupted by war. Greta Gerwig has cited the film as one of Barbie’s main influences, and it’s easy to see why. Winner of the 1964 Palme d’Or at Cannes, Cherbourg’s lush primary colors (residents agreed to have sections of their city painted for the film) are enlivened by dazzling choreography, and composer Michel Legrand’s lyrical score flows through every word. This unforgettable worldwide hit made Catherine Deneuve a star. A truly unmissable big screen experience! In French with English subtitles. (92 mins., DCP)

Join us for a reception celebrating the start of the Wex’s summer film series in Heirloom Café before the screening at 6 PM.
